This is a quick look at the Mini Blade Fuse Tap Kit (also branded as an Add-A-Circuit Fuse Tap) that we used to power the light on our Smittybilt winch on the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ.
What’s in the Package
The kit is more generous than most basic fuse taps:
- 10 mini Add-a-Circuit fuse taps
- 140 mini blade fuses in seven common ratings:
- 5A, 7.5A, 10A, 15A, 20A, 25A, and 30A (20 pieces of each)
It’s really more of a complete fuse assortment that happens to include the taps. For the price, the quantity of spare fuses is a nice bonus.
Build Quality & Limitations
The taps themselves are solidly made. There’s heat shrink covering the connection at the tap end and a standard compression joint on the wire side. We cut and stripped the wires for our particular application and had no problems.
A few real-world notes:
- The wire tails are only 16 AWG. That means these taps are best suited for low-amperage accessories (roughly 10–15 amps maximum). Just because the kit includes 25A and 30A fuses does not mean you should run that much current through these particular taps.
- Getting the fuses fully seated in the plastic housings required noticeable pressure. Once they’re locked in they stay put, but the first few felt tight.
Installation on the WJ
The fuse panel on the 2003 Grand Cherokee WJ sits under the driver’s side dashboard and is completely open and accessible. There were no clearance issues when inserting the fuse tap.
Orientation is simple and important:
- The original (or higher-amperage) fuse goes in the bottom slot closest to the metal blades.
- The new lower-amperage fuse that protects your added circuit goes in the top slot, aligned with the wire.
Once the correct factory fuse is identified, the rest of the install is straightforward. As with any add-a-circuit job, the hard part is always running the new wire — not installing the tap itself.
Real-World Result
We used one of these taps so the winch light turns on with the ignition. Everything worked exactly as expected with no flickering, heat, or issues.
Overall Impression
For around ten dollars this is a practical little kit. You get a clean way to add low-amperage accessories without splicing into existing wiring, plus a large assortment of spare fuses for future projects.
Amazon rating: 5 stars
Highly recommended for simple accessory power taps on vehicles like the WJ where the fuse panel is easy to reach. Just respect the 16 AWG wire limit and you’ll be happy with it.
